Fun when light pollution can work in your favour, getting a good shot with both the aurora and the milky way I find quite challenging, but pleased with this one.

Shot with Nikon d800 14-24mm f/2.8.

First off, let me just say you have captured a lovely shot. I can't really find anything particularly wrong with it, so please view me next words as advice and a matter of preference.

There seems to be quite a bit 'extra' in the shot. The right side of the photograph, and even the middle would have been quite enough, without taking away from the display of colors and contrasts against the darkness of night. My tip to you is to be careful of zooming too far out, as this can distract a bit, as there is almost too much to take it at once. The focus is just right, to the point where even some details of the hill can be seen. However, if the lights in the sky were the main focal point, you did capture it nicely. Just be a tiny bit careful of not trying to show too much at once.

Still, it is a very pretty and impressive photo.

Can't blame you. About the only drawback (at least on my end) is the cold. But honestly, I think I'd brave it, if I could afford to...could use a change of scenery. :-)

That is where investing in good clothes is a big advantage, the fun quickly goes away when all you do is freeze, so for longer trips having firewood, some hot cocoa, grilling some sausages and just stay warm is a big + and makes a world of difference. :)

Quote from the critique up on this page:

i don't see any extra in this image, what is seen is just part of an excellent composition; if the left side and the center of the image had been cutoff, this would have diminished the space that show the grandeur of the sky at night.
also, when doing this kind of photography, one focuses the lens at infinity, just to be sure the important part of the subject is in perfect focus; this had nothing to do with whether "the details of the hill can be seen" or not, as the hill is not very nearby but at a good distance; and thus it shows good resolution everywhere. it would have been problematic if the focus had been done at the hyperfocal distance and enlarged a lot.

this image type, aurora, is one of the best i've ever seen.

I agree.... I think any less and the shot would not have been as good.....
