Magic Pond by Trichardsen Magic Pond by Trichardsen
Trichardsen // Tommy Richardsen // Facebook // flickr // 500px  // Google+

First lightpainting photo ive done.

Used red and green Starburst sticks ( you light them and they burn with different colors ), 2x Led lights ( blue tinted ).
Several 30 seconds exposures stacked and combined in photoshop, detail extracted and sharpened.

Was a bit lucky as well to catch some northern lights in between the clouds.

Cleaned up some of the blown highlights before adding a slight vignette at the end.

Shot with Nikon D800, 14-24mm f/2.8, @ 14mm, f/5.6, iso 100 and iso 1600 for the background and sky.

*fixed the overpowering reds in the image.

I honestly do not have anything bad to say about this photo because everything is just... perfect!
Using lightpainting for this picture was an excellent idea, since it brings beautiful colors that contrast each other perfectly. The colors create a magical atmosphere and coloring (well, painting) the water red gives it a more original aspect.
Even though the ISO is 1600, there is no grain or anything indicating bad quality. It's crisp and framed perfectly, with a straight horizon line. Catching the northern lights makes this even more breathtaking!
The effort put into this is evident and I really love Magic Pond.
Continue doing such amazing work!

The first thing my eye sees is the red of the water, then leading my eye in a circle to the other side of the pond, then to the foreground and back to the background. In the foreground there is grass at a very high contrast green color, the middle a red-orange body of water, and the background a large body of water of some sort and low mountains leading off to a somewhat cloudy sky.

I think that I notice the pond first because of the color, and then the foreground because it is so bright and contrasts well with the pond. The background is a somewhat neutral blue color, although the bright blue clouds bring out a nice contrast with the sky and river in the background.

I enjoy how the piece is done, the colors make it vibrant and alive, and they also create a sense of brokenness to the complete composition, which is both good and bad. I love the mountains in the background and also the sky. (Its a shame you couldn't light those up!) The foreground is also nice, the colors and texture they add to the photograph.

The only part of the photograph I dislike is the left side of the pond in the foreground, as it is green and there is a very distinct line between the two parts of the pond.

I think this photograph will bring emotions to readers, the different hues stirring deep memories. Overall it is a beautiful composition, and the left side of the pond (even though I don't like it), fits well with the broken, compartmental aspect of the photograph.
