Saw the aurora started to build up, but it was quite faint so I set an 8 second exposure, and this happened in just 2-3 seconds.

In my experience, every time the aurora starts to show red, pink and blue colors you know its a good one. :)


Shot with Nikon D800, 14-24mm f/2.8, @ f/2.8, 15mm, iso 1600, 8 seconds.

What do they call the Southern aurora?

Its because of the way the magnetic field works, the aurora gets pulled in at the geomagnetic fields weak spots which is the north and south poles, so a southern light ( aurora australis ) moves around the southern pole, while the northern lights ( aurora borealis ) move around the north pole.
