Ok so this is my first critique, figure I may as well make the most of this premium membership.

The first thing that stands out to me in this photo are the shapes, the curving of the road and the way the colours bend across the sky really works to draw the eyes in.
The clouds also add a nice amount of softness to the scene and give it a dreamy quality as well as helping to balance the piece out.
I also love how all the colours go so well together, it makes it very beautiful the look at, and the density of the stars in the sky add a whole other dimension to the piece.

All in all an absolutely stunning photograph :)

I waited until the aurora calmed a bit and faded slightly so I could use long exposures to get the milky way in the shot without the aurora overpowering the shot completely.

Then I just framed the image to the ground so it created a swirl like shape, adjusted focus, set higher iso for the stars, close the viewfinder curtains so no light came in from the back and made the shot.

I love seeing new work with the D800... too costly for me, so considering the D600. The D90 is great, but I really want an FX sensor. I've never seen the Northern Lights, and I've even been to middle Alaska. Great stuff.

yeah I know the feel about the D90, really felt it coming short with the iso sensitivity, that is why i upgraded so I could properly do the kind of night photography I wanted, and especialy up here where its dark almost 24/7 now.

You can go for some kick as lenses and a lower tier full frame, like perhaps a d700, cause lense will stay, its the cameras that you will upgrade.

And thank you very much. :)

I know what you mean about the equity in those lenses. The camera bodies come and go, but I'm still using lenses made for Nikon F's. I do have a couple of DX lenses I hope won't be ruined if I go FX, but after seeing what my D700 friends have done (and now you) I'd be crazy not to consider an upgrade.
Hope the dark isn't too oppressive. Thanks!

It is a lot of money, but the result i think is worth it, you just wont be buying a camera and 4-5 lenses at once, its a bit more wait between each lens, but still its well worth the wait.
