I think most if not all landscape photographers long for those distant lands with amazing mountains, fantastic rivers, raging weathers and so on, while it does offer some stunning scenery more often than not your best images will come from somewhere close to you.

You have a great advantage photographing where you live because you know the area, what likely weather conditions you will get in a given month, how the season changes the water level in local rivers, what time of the year the sunrise and sunset will be the most colorful, when the first signs of the milky way will show and so on.

Having such knowledge will give you an edge against any other photographer.

The only difference between the two images above is the time of year, direction and a few meters.

I would be stunned if a photographer not familiar with where I live would go home with any image shot at this area, this is a place more or less hidden if you do not know about it and also the small side river you will only see after snow melting or after heavy rainfall which was when I shot these.

Sure, not every place has mountains, fjords or perhaps even rivers, but this I shot 50 meters from my front door during the midnight sun period so the light would not be too strong and I would get the soft shadows in the image.

It is easy to see anywhere as boring if you spend enough time there, but if you try to look at your local area in a new light, the opportunities you have that no other landscape photographer has, places highly unlikely anyone just would visit out of the blue, time of year and so forth, you can do amazing things.

Now I have had this example before, but it is still worth mentioning because this was shot 10 meters from the main road, a place car drives by every single day and not to mention any photographer passing by this area.
Still, none had photographed this place before I did, just because there is a 2 week window every year during the midnight sun period where it is just right, shining just perfectly in on this area.
This it not something you would know unless having spent a considerable amount of time here.

The place where the highest odds of getting the best landscape or nature images is at home, right where you live.
I am certainly saying that you should not travel the world and take great landscape pictures, I am just saying that you should not forget about the possibilities you already have, perhaps there is something special happening where you live in a couple of month, would be a shame if you missed out on what could be an amazing image. :)

Have a great day. :boogie: :woohoo:

"I am certainly saying that you should not travel the world and take great landscape pictures" - Aha! Eliminating competition, eh? :P

Jokes aside, I know what you are talking about. I don't have a lot of amazing landscape close to where I live. However, I do have knowledge about when is the best time to come to certain places. Like the spring bloom of certain flowers, at which time of the year the sun is setting from a good angle etc. It's definitely an advantage to get something nice out of a place that doesn't seem too impressive for 95 % of the year.
